Phillip L. Spooner began studying law in the 1830's, and despite never going to college, became one of the most prominent lawyers in Indiana. Spooner moved to Madison, in 1859.
Spooner took the position of dean of the UW Law School in 1873, and held that position until 1876.
Of Spooner, people described him as: "Quiet and modest. His reasoning process was as clear as crystal."
