Death: Jan. 9, 1914

John Spooner and Emily McConnell, had known each other since they were children. In 1901, Emily began teaching kindergarten at the Irving School (located on Jenifer St.). Spooner had taken a job with an insurance company, and moved to Chicago, where he met, and married Bettie Preston....A few years passed, and Spooner moved his new family back to Madison, and start his job, heading the Hobbins Insurance Agency. Emily and Bettie became good friends, and Emily was always spending time at the Spooner residence. It was then, that John Spooner became completely obsessed with Emily....Despite Emily's efforts to avoid Spooner, his advances became more intense and more frightening. Getting so bad at one point, that Emily's mother, fearing for Emily's safety, would arrange for a carriage to drop Emily off, and then pick her up, at school....Towards the end of 1913, Spooner was out of work, and drinking heavily. Emily decided that she needed get away for awhile, and arranged to take a vacation to Bermuda, in January. When Spooner heard of the trip, he was furious, and told Emily that if she tried to leave, he would kill her....It was the day before Emily's vacation was set to start (1/9/1914). John Spooner was drinking in a local bar, when he got up, and told an employee, "I'll see you in the next world." The employee, knowing the history between Spooner & McConnell, tried to call Emily at the school, to warn her, but couldn't reach her. Spooner went to the Irving school, saw Emily in her classroom, and asked her to meet him in the hallway. When she agreed to join him, Spooner (without saying a word), shot her twice, and then turned the gun on himself (shooting himself in the head). Emily died instantly. Spooner lingered until that evening, before finally succumbing to his head wound....John G. Spooner was the nephew of former U.S. Senator John Coit Spooner
