SOUTH OGDEN – Belva Jeanne Spillman Ard, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on Monday, April 19, 2010.
She was born September 15, 1924 in St. Anthony, Idaho, a daughter of Vernon Franklin and Elaine Adelia Hobbs Spillman. She graduated from South Fremont High School in St. Anthony.
On November 26, 1941, Belva married George Francis Ard. They lived on a dry farm in Teton County. Later they moved to St. Anthony for the winters so their children could attend school. They were married for 58 years prior to Francis's death in 1999.
She was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints where she served in many different callings. She was also a member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers.
As a youth, Belva learned to play the violin and became part of a violin quintet. Their group performed and competed many times. She also played solos in the wards in the area. She was in the high school orchestra, a member of the twirling corps and the girls' athletic club.
She began working in the office of J.C. Penney in 1959. She was the "right hand" for several managers and retired after 30 years of service.
Following retirement, she moved to Ogden. She and her husband traveled to South America, Australia, Europe, Korea, Scandinavia, Alaska, Hawaii and many parts of the United States. She enjoyed crocheting and all of the children and grandchildren have been recipients of her beautiful handmade afghans.
Surviving are her children, Lloyd Ard, Ogden; Verla (John) Hall, Wendell, ID; Conna (Jerry) Andrews, Logan; Betti (Rod) Fifield, Ogden; James (Jeanet) Ard, Maui, HI; Delvan (Becky) Ard, Brighton, CO; 36 grandchildren and 67 great-grandchildren.
