NONA SPENCER BIRKES

Nona Spencer Birkes, of Portland, OR, passed away May 28, 2010 at age 92. She was born on January 18, 1918 on the family farm in Ridgefield, WA to Archie and Pearl Spencer. In 1940 she married Robert Birkes, an electrical engineer. Nona was a devoted wife and mother, and raised six children with her husband of 61 years. After Bob retired they traveled extensively around the world. She enjoyed sewing, square dancing, tole painting, cross-country skiing and politics. She volunteered at Albertina Kerrs, Central Presbyterian Church and for the Republican Party. Nona is survived by five of her six children, David Birkes, Joan Bates, Nancy Liggett, Susan Birkes and Carol Birkes; and two grandchildren, Blue Young and Miro Merrill. She is joining her husband, Bob; her daughter, Barbara Pierce; and her grandson, Shane Haverland. A memorial service was held Monday, June 7, 2010, at Adams Chapel in River View Cemetery, Portland, Oregon. Remembrances may be made to the National Osteoporosis Foundation.
