Thomas Wayne Spears

Cashmere, WA

Thomas Wayne Spears, 68, a well know community leader of Cashmere, WA, died Monday night, April 22, 2013, at his home. He was born on June 9, 1944, in Wenatchee, WA to Beve Thomas and Viola (Horey) Spears. He was a lifelong resident of Cashmere, graduating from Cashmere High School in 1963. After high school, he attended Eastern Washington University for a short period, before returning to Cashmere to work with his father in B.T. Spears Construction. In 1966, he was drafted into the Army and served in the Vietnam War from January of 1966 to November of 1967. That same year, while on leave, Tom married Carol Scammahorn of Cashmere, where they made their home. After his Honorable Discharge, he returned to Cashmere and resumed working in the family construction business. Upon his dad's retirement, he continued to operate the business under T.W. Spears Construction (third generation). He and Carol had three children together, before divorcing in 1978. He served as a volunteer fireman and EMT for the Cashmere Fire Department for 27-1/2 years and was a 44 year member of the Cashmere American Legion Post #64. On February 14, 1979, he married Linda (Hoover) Burleson, who had two children. Together they enjoyed traveling with friends and family to Hawaii, Mexico, Reno, and Vegas. Tom enjoyed the outdoors and when he wasn't building or working in the family orchard, he found time to fish and hunt with family and friends. He took numerous fishing trips to Alaska and never missed Spears Elk camp on the Colockum. He was a huge supporter of the Cashmere School District, 4-H and FFA. The work of Spears Construction over the last 75 years can be seen from Stevens Pass to Bridgeport. If you drove with Tom some place, he would always point out what he built, what his dad built, or what his grandpa built.

He is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Terry Luebeck of Cashmere; son, Tod Burleson of Willits, CA; son and daughter-in-law, Marc and Dawn Spears of Wenatchee; son, Randy Burleson of Wenatchee; daughter and son-in-law, Tracy and Cory Pickeral of Manson; son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Tiffany Spears of Tigard, OR; and seven grandchildren, Makenzi, Elle, Lily, Chase, Drew, Kenji, and Logan. His wife, Linda and his parents preceded him in death.

His family would like to extend a special thank you to Tom's caregiver, Wanda.

A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, April 27, 2013, at Cashmere Middle School, followed by a gathering at the Cashmere Legion. Memorials in his name may be made to the Cashmere Fire Department Cashmere Aid, 101 Woodring Street, Cashmere, WA 98815. Ward's Funeral Chapel, Leavenworth, is handling the arrangements.
