Mrs. Bertha L. Spangler Artz, wife of Willis A. Artz, a well known barber, died very suddenly, on Friday evening of heart disease at her home, 590 Cumberland street. While she was in delicate health for several years suffering with a weak heart and other complications, she was no worse than usual until Thursday last, when she was suddenly overcome with an attack of partial paralysis of the heart and her condition became critical from the very start. It is extremely likely that the end would have come at once but for the opportune presence of Dr. Seth Light, who occupied rooms in the same house. Prompt action saved her life for the time, but it was not for long. She grew constantly weaker and on Friday all hope was lost. After suffering great agony, she passed away at 10 o'clock, on Friday evening with loving relatives and friends at her bedside. She was conscious to the last and bade those about her an affectionate farewell. The deceased was 20 years. She was the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Spangler, of 440 Spruce street, who with the husband, survive her. The remains have been removed to the home of her parents and the funeral will be held from that place, on Tuesday afternoon. The deceased was a most lovable young woman and her untimely demise has cast a pall of gloom upon a circle of friends. Despite physical infirmities unusual for one so young, she maintained a bright and cheerful disposition, and she bore her sufferings with patient fortitude. Even when the last trying hour appeared and she neared the valley of the shadow at a time when her young friends were bouyant and happy in bright anticipations of a gay Easter celebration, there was no terrors for her, no matter how sad the parting here, and with a smile on her lips she passed into the night of death with joyful assurance of waking on the celestial morning in a brighter world. At her own request several friends sang religious songs for her several hours before she died. She was most devoted to her husband and parents and they are overwhelmed with grief at her sudden demise. Mrs. Artz attended St. Paul's United Evangelical Church.
