Mary Ellen Deaton Spangler was born in Tennessee, but came to Arkansas when she was less than 2 years old. She was the daughter of Thomas Deaton born in North Carolina and Nancy [last name unknown] also born in North Carolina. She married James Isaac Spangler who had been born in Virginia 1842 in 1867 in Batesville, Arkansas. The family relocated to Red River County, Texas near Clarksville before the turn of the century. According to the 1920 census, she gave birth to 13 children and 12 of them were alive at that census. She died at her home in the Sherry Community about six miles Southwest of Clarksville, Texas. She had lived with her youngest son, Robert Andrew Spangler, the last years of her life. After she died in December 1926, her son got married the following January 1927. She died of pneumonia. She was preceded in death by her husband who died in 1902.
