Tomasa "Tommie" Solis Brown, 96, left this earth to be with the Lord on Friday, February 18, 2011. Tomasa was born on December 21, 1914, at Bixby Ranch in Cameron County, Texas, to parents Mateo and Guadalupe Guzman Solis.
She attended Our Lady of Mercy Catholic School and was a graduate of Mercedes High School. On July 11, 1944, she married Clifton D. Brown who was an officer in the United States Border Patrol. Tommie received her Bachelor and Master of Education degrees from Pan American University. She was a retired elementary school teacher. Ms. Brown was active in church and community functions and held offices in various organizations including the Retired Teachers Association and the American Legion.
Tomasa's husband, Clifton Brown, and her siblings preceded her in death: Lazaro G. Solis of Mercedes, Alejandro Solis, Francisco Solis, Albert Solis, and Eulogia Solis Krell of La Feria.
Surviving family include two cousins, Ana Solis Riddel and Dora Solis Jenkins of Houston. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews: Lazaro Solis Jr. of Mission, Mary Rose Solis Garcia of Corpus Christi, Ben Solis of Houston, Gloria Solis Hinojosa of Mercedes, Helen Krell Decker of Texas City, Rose Marie Krell Hankins of Alabama, Albert Raymond Krell Jr. of Mercedes, and Elizabeth Krell Decker of Kyle, Texas.
Visitation will be at Rudy Garza Funeral Home in Mercedes, Texas, from 10am. - 9pm. Thursday, February 24, 2011. The Rosary is 7pm. on Thursday at the Funeral Home.
Funeral Mass is 10am, Friday, February 25th at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Mercedes with burial at Solis Cemetery in La Feria, Texas.
Pall bearers will be: Ben Solis, Arthur Decker, Ernest Decker, Ryan Decker, Jay Hankins, and Eric Hankins. Honorary pallbearers are Lazaro Solis Jr. and Atanacio Hinojosa.
Arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home in Mercedes.
