Andrew (Andy) Sofranko, 86, of Hanover Township, passed into eternal rest unexpectedly Friday evening, Feb. 26, 2016, in the Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Plains Township, shortly after admission.

Born May 19, 1929 in Wilkes-Barre, he was a son to the late Andrew and Katherine (Portik) Sofranko.

Educated in the city schools, he was a graduate of the James M. Coughlin High School, and furthered his education by attaining a degree in education from Wilkes College. Until his retirement, Andrew served as a high school guidance counselor, previously as a biology teacher in New Jersey.

Proud of his Slovak heritage, he was a member of the Slovak Heritage Society of Northeastern Pennsylvania, previously taught English in Slovakia, and sponsored several Slovak cousins while visiting the United States. He enjoyed ethnic Slovak cooking and was a skilled goulash cook and enjoyed working in his gardens in his spare time. He was a life member of St. Matthew Evangelical Lutheran Church, North Wilkes-Barre, where he remained quite active over the years. He served as a church elder, would profess sermons prior to an assigned pastor, taught Slovak language lessons at church, served in the church choir and was usually seen participating in various congregation dinners and social gatherings.

He is remembered by family and friends as being the consummate host, having friends and fellow congregation members at his summer home on Indian Lake for countless barbecues and clam bakes over the years.

He and his wife, the former Eleanor Dymond-Soltis, celebrated 19 years of married life together on Oct. 19, 2015.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Albert Sofranko in 2015; by his sister-in-law, Judith, in 2005; by daughter, Connie (Soltis) Yanoshak, in 2014; and son-in-law, Randolph S. Yanoshak in 2009.

Surviving are his beloved wife, Eleanor, at home; sons, John Soltis and his wife, Mary Beth, Conyngham; Andrew Soltis and his wife, Brenda, Limerick; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; nephew, Dr. Alan D. Sofranko, his wife, Caitlin, and their son, Luca, Chalfont; fellow church members and dear friends.

Funeral services for Andy will be conducted Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. from the Wilkes-Barre Heights location of John V. Morris Family Funeral Homes Inc., 281 E. Northampton St., followed by services at 11 a.m. in St. Matthew Evangelical Lutheran Church, 663 N. Main St., Wilkes-Barre. The Rev. Peter J. Haenftling, pastor, will serve as celebrant.

Interment with Rite of Committal will follow in the family lot of Maple Hill Cemetery, 68 E. Saint Mary's Road, Hanover Township.

Relatives and friends may join the Sofranko family for visitation and remembrances Monday from 4 until 7 p.m. There will be a prayer service conducted Monday at 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. Peter J. Haenftling, pastor, officiating.

In lieu of floral tributes, Andy's family would be honored if memorial contributions would be made to his beloved church, St. Matthew Evangelical Lutheran Church, 663 N. Main St., Wilkes-Barre, PA 18705.
