Mary was born in Brown County, Ohio to Hiram and Catherine (Doty) Snyder. She married William Bivens in May of 1864 just after he was discharged from the Union Army after serving in the Civil War. The couple homesteaded in Seward County- Section 2 of K precinct around 1870. They lived here for thirteen years until they relocated to Exeter. Ten children were born to this union. The oldest three- Roanoke Island, Charles and Frank- were born in Illinois. The rest were born in Nebraska- Lewis, Fanny (Frazier), Josephine (Witter), Edward, Frederick, Harry and Chester.
