Fondly known as Grammy PQ because she went to Canada to St Anne's cathedral every chance she got. She always brought back tons of holy water which had its own place in the fridge and God forbid if you should touch or move it.

As a child if I were visiting when there was a thunderstorm the Holy Water came out and I was sprinkled as was she, then we would pull the shades and sit on the sofa with our feet up incase the lighting came through the window.

He life was a difficult one, she was ophaned at an early age and went to live with an Aunt who had her working as a servant at an early age. She married Russell A Richards October 29, 1909. My mother was born march 21 1911 her father died May 16, 1912 from typhoid fever.

Emma moved to Berlin, New Hampshire to be with the brother George Snow, who was a union organizer for the Brown Company Paper Mill. It was there that she met and married Patrick Mullen. Her brother George married Susie Mullen, Patrick's sister.

She had my Mom and had two other children, Philip, who was killed in a train accident, and Helen Susan Mullen.

She lived the rest of her life in Berlin, NH

She grew up poor and unfortunately Grampa liked to drink so there was often no pay check in the house. She made do and always managed. She bought a house at age 65 with a little savings, her social security and having Aunt Helen always living with her and working, she was able to manage.

She bought meat, milk, flour, eggs and butter. Everything else was made from her garden, from vegetables to dessert. She would give her last piece of meat to anyone who was hungry, she lived near the railroad tracks and often saw "bums" a term of her time, the homeless today, they could come to the fence, but not allowed in the yard and she would have something for them, often just a cookie, a piece of pie and a cup of coffee, but always something.

She was always ready to part with a quarter, always a few dollars she could not afford for birthdays and Christmas. She never ever paid a bill late nor did she finance anything she ever bought. She would save her pennies to save up for big items.

She was a wonderful cook, especially her bread, rolls, pies and cakes. To this day I haven't had a piece of pie that beats hers. Her measuring cup was an old tea cup with a broken handle, her pie vent was a broken top of a coke bottle that my grandfather filed smooth for her, her rolling pin a branch sanded. She ate two lamb chops everyday for lunch, chicken at night, and oatmeal for breakfast. She would be appalled at the price of lamb today. Everything she made was with butter or lard.

She never really got over the death of her son Philip and the death of her son-in-law by his own hand.

She was a very devoted Catholic and said her rosary many times a day.

She may appear to be a stern woman in her photo but her heart was of pure gold.

Her favorite color was pink and I am so happy I just found her mother and brother Halsey who died 1/20/1892 age 2, and have connected her with her first husband.
