Birth: Nov. 13, 1817
Hillsborough County
New Hampshire, USA
Death: Jan. 30, 1888
New Hampshire, USA

Lydia married, December 10, 1851, as his second wife, Gilmore Houston.

It is with regret and sorrow that we chronicle the death of Mrs. Gilmore Houston, which occurred Monday forenoon, January 30th, of pneumonia. She had a severe cold for some time, but did not call in services of a physician until Wednesday morning. From the first she had a feeling that she would never get well.

Mrs. Houston was the daughter of William Snow and Deborah Gardner, and was born in Merrimack, N.H., in 1817, and was therefore seventy years of age. She came to Plymouth fifty-two years ago, and with the exception of some time spent in Nashua, has resided in Plymouth and vicinity.

She was the second wife of Gilmore Houston, and married him thirty-six years ago last December. She had no children of her own, but for the six children of Mr. Houston's she did all that an own mother could. Mrs. Houston was a woman whose place in the community it would be hard to fill. She was known by all, and was as companionable to the young as the old; a woman of excellent judgment, keen perceptions, and decided character, yet with the sunniest of dispositions, who in every event saw some fun, and who always found the proverbial bright side, quick at repartee, of ready wit, she was the life of the family where her loss will be keenly felt, and also by many others whom her presence had cheered.

For many years she had kept boarders, and many throughout the state will remember her genial and kingly ways which made her house a home for them, and who will learn with sadness of her death. She is survived by her husband, a step-daughter, Mrs. Charles French of West Henniker, N.H., and one brother and sister, Mr. Thomas Snow of Thornton, N.H., and Mrs. Sarah Dodge of Dorchester, Mass.

The funeral occurred on Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 1st, at the Universalist church, Rev. H.P. Peck of the Congregational church officiating. Loving friends had sent quantities of cut flowers, which were tastefully arranged by Mrs. E.B. Greenleaf, and thus with flowers she always loved so well, she was laid to rest in the Trinity Churchyard. >The Plymouth Record, February 4, 1888, p5.
