OVERHEATED BEARING, ALUMINUM DUST BLAMED FOR TRAGIC EXPLOSION, BLAZE
South Salt Lake - An overheated bearing which triggered a quantity of aluminum dust was blamed Monday night for an explosion which fatally injured two men Friday at Intermountain Research & Engineering Co. (IRECO), 870 W. 2600 South.
South Salt Lake Fire Chief Keith Heddlesten said a rear bearing in a hopper which feeds chemicals into a mixing tank apparently overheated, igniting aluminum dust in the hopper and causing the blast and fire.
The ignition blew a quantity of the dust into the room where the two men were working, Chief Heddlesten said. There it was exploded.
All the burn and blast marks in the room were at least four feet above the floor, he said, indicating that was the level of the dust blown into the room.
Chief Heddlesten said there was "plenty of grease" around the bearing, but that it apparently froze, overheated and sparked the blast.
Gordon Snow, 23, 319 E. 8th South, died Saturday night from injuries suffered (over 100% of his body) in the explosion, and Alma R. McMillan, 42, 4670-13th East, died Sunday.
The blast raised the roof of the mixing room about eight inches and pushed one wall out about a foot.
Investigators Monday dismantled much of the equipment in the mixing room and adjacent areas, trying to determine the cause of the explosion, the chief said.
