Hazel was born to William Gillen Snook and Martha Alice Leland Snook on June 1, 1893. The Snooks came from Fairfield, Jefferson County, Iowa to Wymore in the late 1800's. Prior to coming to Iowa, they were an old New Jersey family coming to the United States from Germany prior to the Revolutionary War. There were so many Snooks living in the west section of Wymore that it was referred to as Snookville. Hazel's father's parents, Peter and Mariah Snook were first cousins who married. Haze's maternal grandparents - Thomas Leland was an immigrant from Manchester, England and Sarah Hensey was the daughter of Jacob Hensey and Sarah Lausbau both of German descent.
Hazel married Charles Barnts on February 4, 1914 at the Methodist Church in Beatrice, Gage County, Nebraska. They had three daughters, Margaret Elaine Barnts Keck (spouse James), Mildred Louise Barnts Chaplin (spouse Clarence), Edna Mae Barnts Caffey Stewart (spouses Jerome Talmadge Caffey & William Hines Stewart) and one son, Charles Gerald Barnts (spouse Doris Larimore).
They spent their entire lives in Wymore, Gage County, NE with Charles preceding Hazel in death in 1967 and Hazel passing in 1981. Her life was her family.
