Miss Jane Smoot, 93, died in Austin on Sept.28, 2013. She was born in Austin, Dec. 13.1919 and lived at her family home all her life. She was the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Lawrence Kelley Smoot and granddaughter of Dr. & Mrs. Richmond Kelley Smoot and Mr. & Mrs. Thomas Herbert Williams. She is survived by cousins Amelia Leigh of Houston and Harriet Clemons of Ft. Worth.

Miss Smoot graduated from Austin High in 1935 and from UT Austin in 1938 (Phi Beta Kappa) with a BA SUMMA CUM LAUDE majoring in British & American Literature and minoring in French, German, and Education. She earned her MA in 1939 and began teaching in AISD. She taught 40 years beginning at University Jr. High, then Austin High and Travis High. Included was a stint at UT Austin where for two and one half years she taught returning soldiers from WW II.

She had a deep appreciation for nature, supported historical preservation, and traveled to many parts of our state, nation and world. Other joys were music, her church, farming and ranching, horseback riding and photography. She was active in AAUW, Austin Women's Club, Pathfinders, Delta Kappa Gamma, Daughters of the Confederacy, Daughters of the American Revolution,Colonial Dames of America, Colonial Dames of the 17th Century, the Huguenot Society, Ladies of the Thistle and Magna Charta Dames.

Visitation with the family will begin at 1:00 p.m. followed by funeral services at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 3, 2013 at Weed-Corley-Fish Chapel, North Lamar. Interment will be held at Oakwood Cemetery.
