Herbert "Chub" Smithback, age 87, of Menomonie died Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010, at the American Lutheran Home in Menomonie.
He was born July 5, 1922, in Cambridge, the son of Marvin and Clara (Nelson) Smithback. He grew up in the Cambridge area and graduated from Cambridge High School in 1940.
During his lifetime, Herbert was a farmer, co-owner of London Lumber Co., a seed corn salesman for Blaney Seed Corn and co-owner of Red Cedar Plumbing and Heating of Menomonie.
He married Avis Johnson on July 20, 1974, in Cambridge. They resided in Menomonie, Turtle Lake and wintered in Sun City, AZ for 17 years.
Herbert is survived by his wife, Avis; two daughters, Nancy (Duane) Bjugstad of Fort Atkinson and Jane (Wayne Miller) Smithback of Rhinelander; five grandchildren, Jody (Scot) Marquardt, Lisa (Tom) Brom and Jason Rusch all of Fort Atkinson, Julie (Joe) Marino of Whitewater and James (Tiffany) Rusch of Milton; nine great-grandchildren, Jennifer (Branden Wisch) Marquardt, Michael Marquardt, Melissa Yakes, Savanna and Kaitlin Brom, Bradley Coxe, Jacob, Lucas and Isaac Rusch; two step- grandchildren, Meghan and Michelle Marino; two nieces; one nephew; and special friends, Erin Williams, the Dunemann family, David Ferk, the Johnsons of Watertown and many other special friends and relatives
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Everett, Walter, Noris and Lloyd; two great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Norma and Inez; and his daughters' mother, Lucille.
A special thank-you to the American Lutheran Home, Red Cedar Medical Center and Dr. Dan Johnson.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Menomonie, with Pastor Roy Harrisville officiating.
Burial will be in Tiffany Cemetery in Boyceville, at a later date.
There will be visitation at the church from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service on Saturday. Olson Funeral Home in Menomonie is serving the family.
