Lifelong Alaskan Catherine Jean Smith, 43, died May 31, 2003, at her home in Anchorage from undetermined causes. A memorial service was at Kehl's Forest Lawn Chapel, 11621 Old Seward Highway. The Rev. Everett officiated. Pallbearers were Paul Smith, Josiah Smith, Paul White, Vincent Bernard, Justin Smith and Ronald Hand. A Native potlatch was held at a later date.
Ms. Smith was born Jan. 20, 1960, in Anchorage. She earned her GED. Catherine's family and friends said: "She loved a good party -- the Talkeetna Bluegrass Festival was her favorite. She was an avid fisher; with a pole in her hand she always brought home the fish. She was the luckiest person when it came to fishing. She loved camping, ceramics, knitting and macrame. She had the cutest dimples when she smiled. Cathy had a special way of always cheering you up, always looking for the positive, with family and friends. She always called her family to say, 'I love you and miss you.' We will truly miss and love her always."
She is survived by her father, Richard Smith of Trapper Creek; daughters, Sonya Smith of Anchorage and Sara Wilson of Washington; son, Joshua Wilson of Washington; sister Nora Kratzer of Elkhart, Ind.; brother, Paul M. Smith of Moose Pass; sister, Mary A. Smith of Trapper Creek; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother, Lucy Lovern Smith "Pitmatalik," and sister, Laura Laverne Smith. She was buried at Angelus Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements handled by Kehl's Forest Lawn Mortuary and Crematory.
