Longtime Anchorage resident Buell Ray Smith, 104, died May 21, 2004, of natural causes at Providence Alaska Medical Center. A memorial service was at South Anchorage Church of Christ, 7800 Stanley Drive. Art Smith officiated. Mr. Smith's remains were interred with those of his late wife at Angelus Memorial Park.
Mr. Smith was born Nov. 16, 1899, in Harper County, Kan. He attended business college in Kansas after graduating from high school. He lived in Dillingham from 1941 to 1952, when he moved to Anchorage. He then worked as lead mechanic for Northern Consolidated until he retired in 1968. He received the Charles E. Taylor award from the Federal Aviation Administration for his 50 years in aviation. He was a gun enthusiast and artist and loved aviation. Mr. Smith was a member of the South Anchorage Church of Christ.
He is survived by nieces, Jeanne Pearson of Kent, Wash., Helen Lee of Salt Lake City and Patricia Belden of Overland Park, Kan.; nephews, Art Smith of Paragould, Ark., Leroy Smith of Bellingham, Wash., and Sid Smith of Delight, Ark.; and good friend, Steve Novak of Anchorage. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Anchorage Pioneers' Home, 923 W. 11th Ave., Anchorage 99501. Arrangements were with Kehl's Forest Lawn Mortuary.
