Pioneer Alaskan Alice Alberta Sellwood Smith, 86, died May 23 at Valley Hospital in Palmer. A visitation was held at the Palmer Funeral Home. A funeral was also held at the Palmer Pioneer Home with a reception following at the Palmer Elks Lodge. The Rev. Henry Guinotte of the United Protestant Presbyterian Church in Palmer in conjunction with the Pioneers of Alaska, Auxiliary No. 11 officiating.
Mrs. Smith was born March 27, 1904, in Lake Nebagomon, Wis. She moved to the Matanuska Vally in May 1935 with her husband, Bill, and their five children, as one of the original colonist families. They homesteaded on the outer Springer system where Mrs. Smith lived in the original home until 1985. In 1985, she moved to the Palmer Pioneer Home. According to the family, she was a dedicated homemaker and was known for her flower gardens.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, and their two daughters, Billie and Jeannie. Mrs. Smith is survived by her sons, Charles of Homer, and Jerry of Anchorage; her daughter, Margaret "Jackie" Cabo of Palmer; and her sister, Jeanette DeFoe of Superior, Wis.; 12 grandchildren; 30 greatgrandchildren; and one greatgreatgrandchild. The family requests that memorial contributions be sent in Mrs. Smith's name to the American Cancer Society, 406 W. Fireweed Lane, Suite 204, Anchorage 99503, or to the American Diabetes Association, 4241 B St., Suite 102, Anchorage 99503. Burial will be in the Valley Memorial Park Cemetery at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday. Pallbearers will be Ben Hermon, Noel Woods, Jay Kerttula, Ray DePriest, Barney Anderson and Jim Hermon. Funeral arrangements were by Evergreen Memorial Chapel, Eighth Avenue and E Street.
