Alaska pioneer Eva O. Smith, 85, died Oct. 27 at Providence Hospital. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday atParkside Church, 7801 E. 32nd Ave., across from Totem Theatres, with Pastor Steve Holsinger and Robert Mather officiating. Pallbearers will be Gary Stromberg, Jim Childers, Mike Crocker, Ed Brown, Delbert Smith, Claric Stromberg and David Appel. Visitation will be from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday at the church.
Mrs. Smith was born May 14, 1909, in Eunice, La., to Emile and Mary Guillory. She formerly owned and operated a restaurant in De Quincy, La. Mrs. Smith came to Alaska with her husband and sons in August 1949. She homesteaded in the Houston area during the 1950s. To many Alaskans, she was known as "The Stanley Lady" and retired as regional manager of Stanley Home Products in 1974. Gardening and cooking for others were her passions. Her grandchildren called her "Momo" and she enjoyed crocheting and sewing for friends and grandchildren. Her family said: "Her positive outlook on life affected those around her and she was loved by those whose lives she touched." Mrs. Smith was a member of Parkside Church, Homemakers of Wasilla, Homesteaders of Houston, Rebeccahs, Zonta Club and the Hotel and Restaurant Employees Union.
She is survived by four sons, Delbert Lee Smith of Wasilla, Noah Smith Jr. of De Quincy, David Smith and Louie Wilton Smith, both of Anchorage; three sisters, Lorena Pender of De Quincy, Ezola Gosset of Lake Charles, La., and Maurice Fontenot of Texas; one brother, Eugene Guillory of Vinton, Texas; 21 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Noah, son, Malcom Henry Smith, two brothers, Thad and Deleco Guillory, and sister, Thelma Guillory. Arrangements were handled by Witzleben Family Funeral Homes and Crematory.
