VERNON W. SMITH
WEST JONESPORT – Vernon W. Smith, 65, died Feb 18 at the Veterans Administration Hospital at Togus.
He was born at Kingman, Dec. 17, 1906, the son of Jack and Mabel (Smith) Smith.
He attended Columbia schools and retired from the U. S. Coast Guard after 25 years of service. Following the service he was captain of sardine carriers for the R. B. and C. G. Stevens Company of Jonesport and for the Jonesport Packing Company.
He was a member of the Jonesport Masonic Lodge; a member of Rumery Chapter, Order of Eastern Star. Before his death he was employed as assistant power plant supervisor at the Cutler Naval Radio Station.
He is survived by his wife, Thelma (Watt) Smith of West Jonesport; one son, Larry Smith of St. George; four sisters, Mrs. Alton (Eva) Smith, Westbrook, Mrs. Joseph (Harriet) DeBias of Westbrook, Mrs. Sylvenus (Bernice) Grant of Columbia and Mrs. Louis (Venia) Lovejoy of Addison; four grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Monday at the Miller Funeral Home in Jonesport at 2 p.m.
Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery, Jonesport.
