Died at his home near Farmington, Davie Co., N.C. ______ typhoid pneumonia Dec. 21st 1876, Bro. Wm. O. Smith, lacking one month of his fiftieth year Bro. Smith had been a Christian for many years, and earnestly devoted to God and the church. He was an energetic worker as steward and Sunday School Superintendent. He felt a great interest in the success of the ministry so he _______ his pastor in every way he could. He suffered much during his illness, but was fully resigned; he assured his devoted wife, "that it was all right that he was ready." The church at Wesley Chapel Yadkinville Circuit ______ its strong pillar. His place can not be filled. He leaves an interesting family consisting of a wife and six children together with the whole church and community to mourn his departure. "Their loss however is his eternal gain."

My NOTES:

William Osborne Smith was born on Jan. 21, 1826, the oldest child of John Smith and Jane Beal Ijames Smith. He was the oldest of eight children and his siblings were: James H. (1827-1842), Elizabeth Edith (1828-1862), Beal Ijames (1829-1885), Pleasant (1831-1854), John Lacey (1833-1899), Sarah A. (1837-1884), and Samuel.

On Oct. 6, 1846, when William was 20 his mother Jane Ijames Smith died. On Nov. 14, 1847, his father remarried the widow Ratledge. In addition to his step-siblings he would also gain a half-sister, Lydia Jane (1848-1891).

On March 9, 1852, when William was 26 years old he married Rachel Melvina McMahan. This marriage would produce nine children: Bettie Belle (1852-1891), Sallie A. (1855-1855), Oscar M. (1856-1857), Lela Mintora (1859-1892), Minnie Florence (1860-1915), Harmon Savannah (1861-1937), William Herbert (1864-1927), Melvina Camilla (1864-1941), and Mary Luna (1871-1955).

It has been told that William served in the Confederacy during the Civil War, however, I have been unable to verify this.

On Dec. 21, 1876, William died at age 50 and left his widow with six children under 18.
