Son of the Mormon Prophet Joseph Smith and his wife Emma. Frederick had been ill for a time and lived with his wife Anna Marie Jones (md. 1857) on the Smith farm outside of Nauvoo.

Near Christmastime 1861 his brother Joseph Smith III rode out to visit him and found that his wife had left him two days earlier. Frederick was sick in bed, the fire was out, no wood had been chopped and no food or water was in the house. Joseph did what was necessary to remedy the the situation and "went after Mother" Emma Smith.

They moved Frederick into the Mansion House where his health continued to decline until his death on April 13, 1862. He was laid to rest in the family cemetery near the Homestead while the Nauvoo church bells tolled 26 times for each year of his short life
