DEATH OF A BUCKLAND MAN
Charles Dodge Smith, 73, Well Known in Shelburne Falls and Vicinity
Charles Dodge Smith, 73, died at his home on the Buckland road near Shelburne Falls Thursday afternoon after two-months illness. He had been in poor health for many years, having been seriously injured by a fall about 12 years ago. Nothing fatal, however, was feared until a year ago, when a valvular heart trouble was discovered. He kept about his work until about eight weeks ago, when he was forced to give up active work and went to Springfield, where he remained in his son's family, when home-sickness and a feeling of unrest urged his removal to his home. Mr Smith was born in Buckland, September 15, 1838, the son of Hoyt and Content Dodge Smith. He had always made his home in his native town and for the past 46 years lived on the farm where he died. In 1858 he married Miss Lucy Frost of Buckland who survives him. The 50th anniversary of their marriage was observed four years ago.
Mr Smith had been employed as mill-wright and carpenter at the Lamson & Goodnow cutlery works in Shelburne Falls for more than 50 years and during that time had never taken a vacation of any length, unless compelled to do so because of sickness. He was a faithful member of the Buckland Congregational church and was an active and loyal worker in Alethian lodge of Odd Fellows of Shelburne Falls, having been affiliated with the lodge for 36 years. A stanch republican all his life, of quiet yet positive nature, he was a man who could be depended upon to act his part in all contingencies. He leaves besides his wido, one son, Will M Smith of Springfield, a granddaughter, Miss Annie G Smith of Springfield, a brother, Fred H Smith of Ashfield, and a sister Mrs Eliza Lane of Hartford, Ct. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Congregational church in Buckland. Rev J Van Kirk Wells will officiate. The service will be conducted by Alethian lodge of Odd Fellows. The burial will be in the Buckland cemetery.
