She spent about 40 years of her life in Sussex County, New Jersey, then, her husband having died, she came west with her daughter, Mrs. Margaret Hiner, with whom she lived.
In 1880 she was living with her daughter Margaret J. Hiner, granddaughter Addie Laferty, and great-granddaughter Matilda Laferty in Garnett, Kansas. The census taker listed her profession as "superannuated". Margaret Hiner and Addie Laferty were milliners.
In 1885 Ada Laferty was listed as head of household. Her mother and grandmother were living with her.
Anna Smith died the night of May 31-June 1. As her obituary put it, "In the early hour of the first day of summer, she passed away."
