Maria R. "Aunt Di" Smith, 98, of Mount Zion, died at 11:30 am Monday in her home. She had been ill several weeks.
She had been a Decatur area resident 95 years, coming from Kentucky to Decatur in 1855 to live in the 500 block W. Main street with her family.
Three years later she moved with her family to a farm about five miles southwest of Mount Zion and she attended Sulphur Springs country school.
Aunt Di remained on the farm until 1894 when she moved back to Decatur. She stayed here until 1908 and then moved to Mount Zion where she lived until 1913. Again Aunt Di returned to Decatur, but this time stayed until about 1941. She then went back to Mount Zion where she lived until her death yesterday.
At the age of 95 she became a member of the Farm Bureau and at 97 she took her first plane ride to visit a nephew in Los Angeles.
Born in Mount Sterling, KY, on Oct. 22, 1852, she was a daughter of Benjamin and Frances Stoner Smith.
She leaves two nieces, Mrs. Cass Rowe and Mrs. Dean McGaughey, Mount Zion; a nephew, Sidney Smith, Dalton City, and five other nieces and nephews in the West.
Funeral services will be a 1 pm Wednesday in the Brintlinger funeral home, where friends may call after 2 pm today, with burial in Mount Zion cemetery.
