Daniel I. Smith, Galesburg Chapel 97, of 550 E. Carl Sandburg Drive, died at 1:55 p.m. Tuesday, February 28, 2012 in Rosewood Care Center.
He was born February 12, 1915 in Pinckneyville, Ill. the son of Sylvester and Helen Hennemann Smith. He married Phyllis Marie Weir on February 16, 1941 in Rio, Ill.
He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Phyllis; a daughter, Doris (and Richard) Kowalski of Galesburg; three grandchildren, Sterling Kowalski, Aimee Wingo, and Angela Keyes; five great grandchildren; a brother, Eugene (and Helen) Smith of Loveland, Colo.; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Janet Smith in 2001; and a brother.
Daniel worked for the former CB&Q Railroad for several years. He was also a farmer for 35 years. He retired in 1979.
Daniel graduated from Alexis High School in 1933. He was a member of the Rio Presbyterian Church.
He served in the United States Army during World War II for five years. He was a captain and served as combat engineer in the Italian Campaign.
Funeral will be 10 a.m. Friday, March 2, 2012 in Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Deacon Rod Gray will officiate. Military rites will be provided by Ralph M. Noble American Legion Post 285. Visitation will be 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday at the chapel. Burial will be in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to OSF Hospice.
