She was born Hazel Ivy Orange in Chickasha, Ok, on March 24, 1929 one of seven children to Reverend L.H. and Bertha Rebecca Fletcher Orange. She graduated from Lincoln High School in 1947 and briefly attended historically black Jarvis Christian College located in Jarvis, TX.
On December 22nd, 1950, Hazel married a handsome soldier Horace William Smith; during his 26 years in the Army and their 63- years of marriage, they traveled to various locations to include Germany, Hawaii, and Japan as well as raised one son and two daughters.
During her lifetime, Hazel wore many hats including a Cub Scout den mother, American Red Cross volunteer, real estate agent and Sunday school teacher but the job that was most important to her was wife and mother.
Hazel is survived by her husband, Horace William Smith; three children: Rodger B. Smith of Fort Sill, Petra Smith of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Wilda L. Ferguson and her husband John of Lorton, Virginia; 6 grandchildren: Camisha Green, Knikkia Smith, David Smith, Brian Short, Julia Ferguson and Devin Ferguson.
She also leaves behind eight great grandchildren as well as many nieces, nephews and friends to numerous to count, they were a blessing to her life as she was to theirs.
