Born in Germany, came to Iowa where she met her husband and married in 1851. Michael went by wagon train to California. His wife, Catherine, unable to stand the arduous journey was on board a steamer which docked at Panama, from where she crossed the Isthmus Canal and boarded another steamer to San Francisco. Michael met his wife in SF and moved to Coloma. Several years later, the family moved to Georgetown and from there to Michigan Bluff (1855), moving to Auburn in 1868.

Her great grandson, John Shurtleff Stevens used to laugh to tell about Catherine, sitting in her rocker on the porch, rocking quickly back and forth, as she happily consumed an entire jar of hot pickles, tears streaming down her face from the heat.
