"G. E. Smith Dies of Long Illness -
Leading Springfield Citizen Passes Away After Fight to Recover Health"

G. E. Smith, retired realtor and prominent figure in the civic and political life of Springfield and Robertson County for nearly half a century, died here Monday night at 7 o'clock after an illness of several years, the last three of which he had been confined to his home by invalidism. He was 71 years of age. Mr. Smith was a member of one of Robertson County's leading pioneer families. For a number of years, he was in the mercantile business here. He also for eight years served as Robertson County Clerk. After this, he was 15 years engaged in the real estate business here. During the last years of his life, he was a member of the County Court. He had always taken an active part in local civic affairs and had been a leader in politics of the county all of his life. The illness which finally caused his death began several years ago when he suffered a fractured hip. Funeral Services were held at the home of his son, Fred M. Smith here on Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock by Rev C. E. Haile, pastor of Springfield Nazarene Church, of which he was a member, and Rev. D. D. Saxon of Greenbrier, a former pastor; and Rev. S. F. Shannon of this city. Burial was in Elmwood Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Herbert Shannon, Tom Holman, Frank Rose, Dr. S. E. Wilkinson, Bob Hooper, and L. E. Davis. Surviving are his son, Fred M. Smith and two sisters, Mrs. Charles H. Love and Miss Tabitha Smith, all of Springfield.
