Isabel Smith Lucas, 91, of Springdale, went home to our Lord Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2013, in Canterbury Place, Pittsburgh, surrounded by her pastor and her loving family. She was born on a farm in Livermore, Pa. She attended the Duncan No. 6 School in Conemaugh Township and graduated from Blairsville High School. Isabel obtained her bachelor's degree in 1945 from Indiana State Teachers College and her master's degree in 1957 from The University of Pittsburgh. She moved to Springdale with her sisters and taught second grade at Colfax Elementary School. Isabel met her husband, Edward, while bowling. They married in 1961 and celebrated 26 years together. She taught at St. Alphonsus School while her children were growing up. The family spent time traveling, camping and playing games together. Isabel enjoyed gardening, crossword puzzles and her card club of 40 years. Gatherings at Christmas, Fourth of July and yearly family reunions were highlights of the year. Isabel is survived by her children, Linda Palmer, of Irwin, and her son, Jonathan, and his father, Philip (Rick), Cynthia Walpole, of Gibsonia, and her children, Matthew and Kathryn, and Edward and his wife, Brenda, and children, Kylie and Tyler Lucas, of Sarver. Also surviving are three brothers, Rev. John Cyrus (the late Frieda) Smith, of Grand Junction, Colo., Harold B. (Lillian) Smith, of Clarksburg, and James Walter (the late Barbara) Smith, of New Kensington; and sister-in-law, Rose Smith, of Lower Burrell. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward A. Lucas; parents, George and Vernetta Jane Stiffey Smith; sisters, Edith (Howard) Elwell, Helena Smith and Annabel Smith; and her brother, Robert Smith. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday in the CHARLES B. JARVIE SPRINGDALE FUNERAL HOME INC., 801 Pittsburgh St., with services to commence at 11 a.m. Monday, in Springdale United Presbyterian Church, with Pastor David Carlisle presiding. (Everyone is asked to please meet at church.) Burial will follow in Deer Creek Cemetery, Harmar.
