Averill Ann (Smith) Barisich, daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, friend and supreme advisor, was born in Faribault, Minn., the second daughter to Verrill Francis and Collette Catherine Smith. Averill enjoyed a storybook childhood living in her grandfather's home filled with multiple generations of family, friends and sleigh rides, followed by a move to Portland with her family in 1940. After graduating in 1945 from Portland's Washington High School, and then studying visual arts at San Jose State University in California, Averill returned to Portland working both as a medical receptionist and as a handkerchief counter sales girl at Meier & Frank's downtown. On May 24, 1952, Averill married Andrew James Barisich at Our Lady of Sorrows Church. In 1954, together the couple bought Lutz Tavern at 47th Avenue and Woodstock Boulevard in Southeast Portland. With endless energy, integrity and professionalism, they built the business as a team, while still having the love and patience to raise three children. With their expertise, the business grew to be truly world famous, serving generations of locals and visitors alike for over 56 years. Their place was the place where everyone was welcome and lifelong friendships were made. Always available to serve as counselor and confidant, countless neighbors, friends and patrons simply referred to "Ave" as "Mom." She loved the color green, fireplace fires, snow, slot machines and kitties. Averill was predeceased by her husband, Andy; and their eldest son, Daniel Francis. She leaves behind daughter, Lilias Ann; son, Brian Andrew; and grandchildren, Traves Daniel, Tracie Marie, Allison Collette and Vincent Andrew.
