From the book, The Fighting Men of Oklahoma: CPL Smith enlisted in the service at Ft. Sill on Sept. 18, 1940 and received his basic training at Camp Barkeley TX with the 45th Div. He then participated in mobilizing the 86th Div. at Camp Howze TX and was sent overseas with that Div. He then transferred to the Air Transport Command and was stationed in Australia and served 18 months. He was discharged on Oct. 18, 1945 and was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, Victory Medal, American Defense Medal, Expert Infantry Badge and the Good Conduct Medal.
