Hilda Elizabeth Smith Richardson, 89, passed away at her home in Joplin, Missouri on Monday, April 13, 2009.
She was born July 31, 1919 on the family farm outside Colony, Kansas the youngest of five children of Russel and Mary Smith.

She attended Kansas State Teachers College in Pittsburg, KS graduating with a degree in Education in 1940.

She received her Master's Degree in 1966 from Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia, KS.

She began her teaching career in a two-room school in Oakley, Kansas.

She was a homemaker, taught elementary school at Kincaid, KS and later taught special needs students in St. Marys, KS.

After her years of teaching she served as the Director of Education at the Parsons State Hospital in Parsons, KS after which she worked at the Joplin Diagnostic Center. She then taught for ten years in the education department at Missouri Southern State College.

She was a member of and served as President of the Council of Exceptional Children. She was also named Missouri Educator of the year. After retirement from MSSC, she taught for four years at Citadel Bible College in Ozark, AR. She founded the Joplin Reading Clinic in partnership with Erin Ray. She also founded an after school reading program associated with the Joplin Boys and Girls Club.

She was a member of Prairie Flower Bible Church in Webb City, MO.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Don, daughter, Pam, her parents, her sister Alta Jean and her brothers Bruce, Merle and Paul Smith and two granddaughters Lindsay Wilkins and Rachel Richardson.

She is survived by her sons, Larry (Linda) of Derby, KS, Mike (Pam) of Ardmore, OK, Steve (Peggy) of Cassville, MO, Kent (Sherri) of Joplin, MO, daughters Jill (Mike) Wilkins of Oronogo, MO and Judi Sims of Joplin, MO. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

We are extremely grateful to our sister, Judi Sims who provided exceptional care for Mom during the last few years of her life. She will be sorely missed by her children, her extended family and friends.

Services will be held on Friday at 10:00 a.m. at the Simpson Funeral Home, 400 W. Daugherty, Webb City, MO. Interment services will be held at the Colony Cemetery at Colony, KS at 3:30 p.m.

The family will receive friends on Thursday from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the Simpson Funeral Home in Webb City.
