Sibyl the first of the family of six children born to the parents of Raymond and Sibyl Smith, was born in the Orting Valley. The house she was born in was on the west side of the Puyallup River southwest of the heart of Orting and at the very edge of the hill that rises so steeply. Sibyl while still young, moved with the family to Washington's Peninsula, around the Port Townsend area of Irondale. In the summer during berry picking time Sibyl would return to her childhood home to pick the ripe berries to make extra money to supplement some of the family income. This she did often with her brother Wayne and the two would live with their Grandmother Hulda Harris in McMillan.
During a local dance in Orting, Sibyl met Sidney McWhorter Baker and the two married on October 3, 1937. They were married in Port Townsend and raised their family of four in Pierce County, SE of Tacoma. During the mid fifties they took on raising foster children. As many as 72 different children came to live for short and longer periods of time of up to five years for two boys. The two were married for 57 years before Sidney passed. Sybil enjoyed the outdoor life and the two were avid hunters and fishermen. Sibyl lived another seventeen years after Sid's passing. The first few were in Maylo, Washington where the two were living, but the last two thirds were spend living with her oldest daughter near Tacoma.
