Zo Smith was born in rural Borden County in 1923, into a family of four daughters and a son. She demonstrated early her gift of singing, which she especially enjoyed with her sisters. In the 1940s, after graduation from Fluvanna High, Zo moved with her family to Washington, D.C., where the family worked at government positions during WWII. She maintained a long-distance relationship with her high school sweetheart, Joe Landrum. They were married August 8, 1943, in San Diego, California, and celebrated their 61st anniversary before Joe's death in 2004.

Zo and Joe worked side-by-side to maintain the family farm. Zo used her many talents in the community working diligently in many service organizations. She taught Sunday School, led the church choir, and represented the Fluvanna United Methodist Church in many capacities, both locally and within the wider Church. She was an excellent cook, sharing with neighbors and friends.

Zo was preceded in death by her husband, Joe, and sister, Madaleine Miller. She is survived by her sisters, Cecile Herlihy and Rossa Pinnix of Greensboro, N.C., along with her brother, Excel Smith of Trinchera, Colorado; daughter & son-in-law, Gwen & Charles Cate of Lorenzo; son & daughter-in-law, Michael & Kathleen Landrum of Midland; 3 grandchildren and spouses, Charles & Alicia Cate of Waxahachie, Brandon & Shelley Cate of Lubbock and Mindy (Landrum) & Martin Olivares of Glendale, Arizona. Zo also leaves 7 great-grandchildren, Kinley, Meagan, Chase, Bailey, Jaxon, Braxton, and Lillie as well as a host of nieces and nephews and their families to cherish her memory.

Pallbearers will be David, Steve, Monty, Lance, Chad, and Cody Beaver.
