Johnnie Elizabeth Carter was born on September 27, 1925 and transitioned from this world on August 26, 2014 at 1:30 a,m. Mom began her life in Tupelo, Mississippi the daughter of Bernard and Alberta Smith. Jonnie had nine siblings, all preceded her in death. Johnnie was a student of excellence, graduating Spellman University as Valedictorian in 1949. Johnnie met a handsome soldier, on a train going home for Christmas, James Joseph Carter who she married in 1947. Their union created five children Joseph, James, Vera, Leonard (preceded her in death) and William Carter. The family lived in Mississippi, Colorado, France, New Mexico and Germany retiring in El Paso. Mom loved the Franklin Mountains and vowed not to leave. Mom was a proud teacher at Bowie High School in the Home Economic Department for many years. She has five grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Her home was a place to be fed in body and spirit. Johnnie was a member of McCombs Baptist Church and she was also a proud member of the Zeta Phi Beta sorority assisting many of her students in developing life skills and in attaining their goals of becoming pillars of the community. In lieu of flowers please make donations to hospice or Parkinson’s research. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 2, 2014 at Sunset Funeral Home-Northeast. Funeral Service will be at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 3, 2014 at McCombs Baptist Church. Interment will be at 1:30 p.m. at Fort Bliss National Cemetery.
