Lorraine Elvera Clemans, a resident of Albany for over 50 years, died Tuesday in a care facility in Longview, Wash.
Born on a farm near Lakota, Iowa, to Annis Q. Smith and Emma Christensen-Smith, Lorraine grew up during World War I and graduated from Lakota High School.
She married H. Robert "Bob" Clemans on May 10, 1934, at the home of her parents in Lakota. The couple made their first home in Titonka, Iowa, and lived in several towns in Washington, Iowa and South Dakota before moving to Oregon.
A stay-at-home mother of two children, Lorraine said she and Bob were rock hounds. She especially enjoyed the digging. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Royal Neighbors of America since 1927, serving as oracle in 1965, 1966 and from 1985 to 1988. Lorraine held several other offices over the years and volunteered at the Albany Senior Center as hostess. She was active in the Albany Senior Sewing Circle since 1979 and a member of the AARP and the Retired Senior Volunteer Program. Lorraine loved gardening, especially African violets; quilting; sewing; and crocheting. She especially enjoyed helping others whenever possible; was recognized as Woman of the Year in 1992 by the United Methodist Women and Neighbor of the Year 1960 to 1961; and received a certificate of recognition from the Modern Woodman of America on Sept. 24, 1987.
Lorraine was preceded in death by her husband in 1977; her parents; four half-sisters; a brother; and a grandchild.
She is survived by son John Clemans of Longview; daughter Roberta Knott of Vancouver; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews in the Midwest.
She is deeply loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
A remembrance service for family and friends to honor her life will be Saturday at the Albany Senior Center, followed by inurnment at Willamette Memorial Park in Albany.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Albany Senior Center or Call-A-Ride in memory of Lorraine.
Green Hills Crematory in Kelso, Wash., and Willamette Memorial Park in Albany are handling arrangements.
