Millicent E. Haines, 72, of North Bath Road died Dec. 5, 2000, of Parkinson's disease and cancer.

She was born in South Thomaston, a daughter of Harry L. and Marion Morse Smith, and attended schools in South Thomaston, Rockland and Bath. She received her general equivalency diploma and was a member of the Morse High School class of 1947.

She married Ardenne S. Haines on June 27, 1953.
As a teen-ager she worked several summers at the summer play programs. She worked at the Colonial Club Restaurant, as a housecleaner and at the Bath Canning Co. She then worked for 17 years as a special education teacher's aide for children with special needs in the West Bath School. Mrs. Haines volunteered with the Brownies, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. She was a member of the West Bath Grange. She had been a member of the First Baptist Church in Bath, then for 17 years was a member of the Edgecomb Baptist Church, where her husband was pastor. She enjoyed teaching Sunday school and helping with youth groups in earlier years at both churches.

Her interests included quilting with a sewing group of which she had been a longtime member. Other hobbies were knitting, crocheting and canvas work. She made many afghans and items for children such as mittens, gloves, scarves and decorations for Christmas trees. She enjoyed giving the many things she made as gifts, said her family.

Surviving are her husband of Bath; her mother, Marion Smith Goding of Camden; two sons, Ardenne "Dean" S. Haines II and Lawrence Haines, both of Bath; two daughters, Sarah Lien of Nevada and Patricia Guerette of Bath; three brothers, Alfred Smith of Rockland, Harrison Lee Smith of North Carolina and Leonard Smith of Gardiner; a sister, Pauline Long of Camden; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

There will be no visiting hours. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday in Oak Grove Cemetery with the Rev. Michael Pearson officiating.

Arrangements are by Desmond Funeral Home, 638 High St., Bath
