Sarah was the daughter of William Smith. In 1777, she received 400 acres of "Moore's Plains in Prince George's County from her brother, Nathan. On 29 November 1781, she married George Hilleary, son of Walter Henry Hilleary and his wife, Cassandra Magruder. George and Sarah resided at Moore's Plains with their family.
The family cemetery at Beechwood was the burial site of many family members.
