Frank A. Smith, age 83, of Quincy, died peacefully, Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010 surrounded by his loving family at the John Scott House in Braintree after a brief illness. Mr. Smith was born in Quincy, was raised and educated in Quincy schools. He was a lifelong Quincy resident. He worked as a machinist for 33 years at Boston Gear Works where he was known as the Whistler. He retired in 1985, and during retirement enjoyed participating in various flea markets. He was devoted to his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Beloved husband for 62 years of Barbara I. (Johnson) Smith. Devoted father of Iline Connors and her husband William of Pembroke, Barbara Read and her husband Robert of East Bridgewater, William Smith and his wife Patricia of Quincy, Gordon Smith and his wife Dawna of Weymouth, Frank Smith of East Bridgewater, Brian Smith and his wife Paula of Quincy, and Ellisa Maiolino and her husband Peter of Middleboro. Survived by 19 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, and grandfather of the late Jennifer Smith. Brother of Richard Smith and his wife Audrey of Quincy, Eleanor Kay of Hanson, Florence Levesque of Arkansas, the late John Smith, the late Ernest Smith, the late Doris Wean, and the late Marion Wood. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be conducted at the Quincy Point Congregational Church, 444 Washington Street, Quincy, Thursday, Feb. 11th at 11 a.m. Reverend Ann G. Suzedell, Pastor, will officiate. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting Hours at the Sweeney Brothers Home for Funerals, One Independence Avenue, Quincy Wednesday 4 - 8 p.m.. Interment Blue Hill Cemetery, Braintree. For those who wish, donations in Mr. Smiths memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1115 West Chestnut Street, Brockton, MA 02301.
