Louis Bernard Smith died Sunday June 19 in the Milton Hospital after suffering a heart attack. He was age 83.
Mr. Smith was born in Burr Oak, Kansas and was a resident of Milton for over 50 years. Mrs. Smith was a Navy Veteran of World War II. He served as a photographer's mate 2nd class and fought in the Pacific Theatre.
Mr. Smith worked for Keystone Camera Company of Dorchester as a National Service Manager for over 20 years. After retiring from Keystone he left the Boston area and later returned to work for the Jed Instrument Company. Mr. Smith worked for the Jed Instrument Company of Dorchester for 10 years. Mr. Smith finished his working career with Market Mark-It Company of Easton where he was an engraver. He retired at the age of 76.
Mr. Smith was a member of the Milton Police Auxiliary for over 25 years and served as a captain. He was also a crossing guard at Pierce School and Milton Academy for ten years. One of his proudest achievements was his recognition from the Town of Milton for being its' National Civil Defense Coordinator. It was a position he held for many years and he was in charge of evacuating the town in case of an emergency.
Mr. Smith was a 60 year member of the Lebanon Lodge of Kansas A.F. & A.M. and the President of the Unquity Sportsman's Club of Milton. His passions were fishing, hunting, photography, gardening and computers.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mildred E. (Dubay) Smith. He was the devoted father of Karen (Smith) Bowes and her husband John of Quincy and Jack Bernard Smith and his wife Jill of Maine.
Grandfather of Jeanette Downing of Hanson, Carolyn Smith, Justin Smith and Emily Smith all of Maine. Also survived by 3 great grandchildren; brothers Eugene Ray Smith and wife Bonnie of Scandia, Kansas and Jack Larry Smith and wife Dorothy of North Dakota and the late Harold Lee Smith.
Funeral services, Thursday, June 23 in the Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home, 5 Canton Ave., Milton at 10:00 o'clock.
