Brenda was born on April 5, 1953, in Elk City, Oklahoma, to Jack E. and Barbara (Hargues) Smith. She died on Wednesday, October 16, 1996, at Presbyterian Hospital in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma , at the age of 43 years, 6 months and 11 days.

Brenda was raised in Weatherford, Oklahoma, and attended schools in Weatherford, graduating from Weatherford High School in 1971. On December 22, 1973, she married Mark Lumpkin in Weatherford, Oklahoma. She attended Southwestern Oklahoma State University graduating in 1974, and then receiving her Master's in Guidance and Counseling in 1978. She taught at Weatherford Public Schools from 1975 to 1985. She then worked at Southwestern Oklahoma State University for two years, teaching counseling and assisting student teachers. She was a member of Gamma Phi Beta, Phi Alpha Theta, Delta Kappa Gamma, Activities Council-Student Senate, Oklahoma Education Association, National Education Association, PEO, member of Custer County Historical Society, and was named Teacher of the Year in 1985 from the Weatherford Public Schools. Brenda organized the student assistance program at Clinton High School, where she was currently working as a counselor and teacher.

Brenda attended the First Baptist Church of Weatherford, where she was the Univerisity Director for Sunday School. On May 30, 1965, she was baptized at the First Baptist Church in Butler, Oklahoma. Memorials may be made to the Southwestern Oklahoma State University Foundation Scholarship Fund in memory of Brenda Lumpkin.

Brenda is survived by her husband, Mark Lumpkin, of the home; one son, Lucas Smith Lumpkin, of the home; one daughter, Shelby Caroline Lumpkin, of the home; her mother, Barbara Hatchell, of Weatherford, Oklahoma; her father, Jack E. Smith, of Butler, Oklahoma; one brother, Marc Hatchell, of Las Vegas, Nevada; two sisters, Marilyn Jenkins, and her husband, Larry, of Enid, Oklahoma and Kelli Strong and her husband, J.D., of Yukon, Oklahoma. She was preceded in death by her step-father, Eddie Hatchell.
