Courtland James Smith came to Minnesota with his mother and elder brother Frederick in around 1900. In 1907 he married Gladys A. Adams and they had four daughters: Olive Jane, Beulah Marian, Edith Josephine, and Mary Elizabeth ("Beth"). In about 1919 Courtland and Gladys separated and divorced. Courtland lived the rest of his life in the Twin Cities area. He was known to his family as "Uncle Suds" because of an unfortunate prediliction for beer -- he was rarely seen without a glass of it in his hand.
