Mary Frances (Merridy) Smith Deater, 84, of Frederick died June 12, 2013 at Washington Medical Center in Washington DC.

Born March 8, 1929 in New Market, Maryland, was the daughter of Mary Ruannah Engle and Earl Leo Smith, Sr. and the wife of Harry Richard (Jim) Deater.

She went to New Market Elementary and to Frederick High School, from which she graduated in 1946. She worked as a secretary/bookkeeper for Ox Fiber Brush Company, then Floyd Culler Construction Company, and finally for Minute Man Press.

A member New Market Methodist Church for many years, she served as a Sunday School teacher, an MYF counselor, a Bible School director and a member of the Official Board of the Church as well as a member and leader on many committees. She and Jim joined Calvary Methodist when they moved into the city where they continued working with church youth for many years. The scores of kids with whom they worked will remember, among other things, trips to the Fun Factory, to Gettysburg battle field, to the cabin on the Monocacy, to West River Church Camp, to Charlottesville, VA, and lots of Halloween parties. Later, Merridy and Jim joined Thurmont Methodist Church.

The couple were members a bowling league for more than two decade and shared an interest in history, especially the War Between the States. She was an avid Colts fan until they were taken from Baltimore, when she joined Jim as a devoted Redskin follower.

Surviving, besides her husband, are a sister Shirley Ann Smith and her husband Morris Favorite of Hampstead, sister Barbara Ruannah Smith and her husband Baron Rossen of the city, sister Jean Audrey Smith and her husband Louis Silvers of the city, sister Nancy Engle Smith McCartney of Middletown and a brother-in-law Donald Elliott of Blacksburg, VA. She has twenty-two nieces and nephews, twenty-five great nieces and nephews and many step nieces and nephews, and more than twenty great-great nieces and nephews.

Mary Frances was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Pauline Elizabeth Smith Boone and Margaret Louise Smith Elliott and two brothers, Earl Leo Smith, Jr. and Charles Edward Smith as well as two brothers-in-law, two sisters-in-law and one nephew.

Friends and family will receive visitors at the Stauffer Funeral Home at 1621 Opossumtown Pike from 2pm until 4pm and 7pm until 9pm, Monday, June 17th and the service will be given by Pastor Ray Moreland; Tuesday, June 18th at 1pm.

Interment will be at the family plot in Mt Olivet Cemetery immediately following the service.
