Melba Smith Datwyler, our dear sweet mother who was almost 100 passed away on Monday, October 27, 2014 in St George, Utah of natural causes. She was born in Marion, Idaho on March 4, 1918, daughter of Hannibal Hamlin and Rhoda Perry Smith. She later moved to Logan, Utah where she met and married Charles Datwyler July 22, 1934. The marriage was sealed for time and eternity in the Logan LDS Temple in 1952.


Melba and Charles moved to Ogden in 1947. She was an active member of the LDS Ogden 9th Ward and served many years in the Primary Organization as well as other callings. Melba worked at Ogden High School in the lunch program for several years.


Melba was always gracious and proper, quietly influencing all who came in contact with her. She saved greeting cards and letters given to her by friends and family and enjoyed looking at her 18 photo books many times over.


Melba loved gardening, chocolate, country music and fishing with Chal.


Melba was a loving Mother, Grandmother, Great and Great, Great Grandmother.


She is survived by her four daughters; Donna (Art) Lane, Toquerville, UT, Gail (Howard) Waters, Cedar City, UT, Barbara Merrill (Ray) Muzzy, St George, UT, Charlyn (Bob) Oyler, Sandy, UT; 16 Grandchildren, 43 Great Grandchildren, and 8 Great, Great Grandchildren, and many dear nieces and nephews.

Melba was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Datwyler, one grandchild, 2 brothers and a sister.


The family would like to thank the wonderful friends and staff at Beehive Independent Living, Platinum Care Assisted Living and Dixie Regional Medical Center, for their never ending love, kindness and care during the last five years.


Funeral Services will be held Saturday Nov 1, at 11:00 a.m. at Leavitts Chapel of Flowers Mortuary 836 36th Street, Ogden UT. Funeral will be preceded by a viewing at 10:00 a.m. at the mortuary. Burial and graveside service will be held at the Logan Cemetery at 2:00 pm on Nov 1st. In lieu of flowers you may donate to the Primary Childrens Hospital.
