Bertha Mae Campbell, Sales Audit Clerk
Bertha Mae Campbell, 94, a sales audit clerk who worked at Hecht Co. about 15 years until retiring in 1966, died after a heart attack December 23rd at her home in Hyattsville (Lewisdale), MD.
Mrs Campbell, a native of Winchester, TN moved to Washington, DC area in the 1930s. She was hired as a salesclerk at Woodward & Lothrop in the early 1940s and then worked for two years for the Post Office. She joined Hecht's and worked there until 1952, when she took a clerical job in the statistical services department with the US Coast Guard. A year, later, she was back with Hecht's.
Her husband, Lewis D. Campbell, died in 1951.
Survivors include two daughters, Mae Sue Mardres of Hyattsville, MD and Mildred Ann Chamberlain of Charleston, SC; five grandchildren; four great-grandsons; and two great-great grandsons.

Campbell, Bertha Mae Smith, age 94, died Dec. 23, 1995 at her residence at 2204 Calvert St, Hyattsville, MD. She was born and raised in Winchester and was the daughter of Jeff and Suan Tucker Smith.
She was a member of Goshen Cumberland Presbyterian Church and told many stories about the church and its' activities. After completing high school, she taught school near the Sewanee Mountain. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Fred D. and Leonard F. Smith.
She married Lewis D. Campbell (deceased 1951), of Coffee County and moved to Washington, DC in 1930. She was employed in the federal government and retired in 1966 from the May Co.
Survivors include daughters Mae Sue Mardres of Hyattsville, MD, Mildred Ann Chamberlain of Charleston, SC; grandchildren, Randy Mardres of Silver Springs, MD, Douglas Mardres of Edmonton, Canada, Linda Mardres Lang of Raleigh, NC, Annette Chamberlain Nguyen of Charleston, SC, Margaret Chamberlain Moyer of Greenville, SC; four great-grandsons, Jock, Kent, Lije, Ross Mardres and two great-great grandsons, Matthew, Anthony Mardres of Edmonton, Canada; sister-in-law, Rozetta Smith (Leonard) of Ft Lauderldale, FL; brother-in-law, Harry P. Campbell of Nashville, TN, and many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
Graveside services and interment were at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va. on January 2, 1996.
