Della G. Mack
July 30, 1921 - July 14, 2009

SALEM - Della Garnet Mack 87, died at her residence July 14 of heart failure. Della was born July 30, 1921 at home in West Salem, the seventh child of eight born to Frederick G. and Garnet Palm (Wilson) Smith. The Wilson family was early Oregon pioneers, settling in the Willamette Valley shortly after the Civil War and Della enjoyed telling stories about her grandparent's trials traveling over the plains with a wagon full of young children especially when anyone complained about traveling with a fussy youngster in a car seat. With a sense of humor and good common sense she taught the family to keep all things in perspective. Della's education in West Salem schools ended at age 14, when she went to work in a local cannery to help support her family, her father having died when Della was ten years old. Della married William R. Mack, Sr. on August 5, 1939 in Silverton. They were married 43 years until his death in 1982. Della like, many women of her generation, never worked outside the home after her marriage. She was content and proud to be a homemaker. She enjoyed cooking for her family and one ever left her home hungry. Della was an accomplished seamstress, who until her later years, designed and made her own clothing. Her children and grandchildren treasure the quilts and stuffed animals that she either knitted or crocheted until arthritis in her hands forced her to give up two crafts in which she excelled in. Determined not to let age slow her down, when she was well into her mid-eighties, she would walk several blocks to catch a bus, riding it to the Senior Center, where she played cards and especially enjoyed watching the dancing. Her great adventure was traveling by plane for the first and only time at age 65, when she toured Great Britain and Ireland with her son Bill, daughter-in-law Joanne and grandson David. She quickly became a lover of four o'clock teas, especially full Irish teas with rich clotted cream, 1/2 pints at the pubs, double decked buses and little red phone booths. Although she seldom travelled after seeing a little of the world, she'd encourage young family members to take chances by telling them, "I was really afraid to get on that plane, but oh, I would have missed so much if I hadn't" Della was preceded in death by her seven siblings; husband, William; and four of her five children, Dale in 1990, Gary in 2004, Michael in 2005 and Linda Tolento in 2009; along with granddaughter, Caroline Mack in 1979. Left to cherish her memory are her eldest son, William R. (Joanne) Mack; grandsons, David Mack, Thomas (Sonja) Mack, Larry Miotke; along with great-grandchildren, Chris (Britnii) Mack, Becky Mack, Katelyn Wilson; and great-great-grandchildren, Julia and Carter Mack all of Salem. Also surviving are grandchildren, Tim Mack, Ventura, Calif., Lacy (Sam) Abergel; great-grandchildren, Kelsey, David and Mackenzie Abergel, Simi Valley, Calif.; granddaughters, Sherri Mack and Toni Johnson; great-grandchildren, Alexia and Dakota Lopez, Tristan and Camille Johnson, Robert (LeAnna) Green; great-great-grandchildren, Lauren and Jordan Green, Napavine, Wash.; grandchildren, Dale Mack Jr., Linda Adams, Lyons; granddaughter, Kim Mack, Tacoma, Wash.; granddaughter, Erin Dupont; great-granddaughters, Bridghett and Melody Dupont, Meridian, Idaho; and numerous nieces and nephews. Family and friends are invited to attend a service of Remembrance at 2 p.m. Saturday, August 15 at City View Funeral Home. As was her wish, Della will be interred alongside her husband at Willamette National Cemetery, Portland. Arrangements are by City View Funeral Home.
