Esther L. Smith, 95, of Sanford, formerly of Waterboro, died on Sunday, Augusts 19, 2012 at the Newton Center in Sanford.

Esther was born on February 15, 1917 at the Smith Farm on West Road in Waterboro to Ivory and Ruth (Hamilton) Smith. She was educated in the one room, eight grade school house at Old Corner before attending Waterboro High School. She graduated from high school in 1934 and was the class historian. She was the last surviving member of the class of fourteen students. On October 30, 1937, she married Everett W. Smith (no relation) and together they raised two daughters.

When Esther began to get older she started writing down her historical memories. She eventually went on to have these memories published. She was also writing a book in collaboration with a group of people interested in the history of the Waterboro Old Corner First Baptist Church. Esther had a life-long love affair with literature. During her six years as a resident of Hillcrest Gardens in Sanford she was able to read over 100 books through the courtesy of local libraries and the Maine State Library in Augusta. Esther will be remembered as a kind and loving woman and will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

Esther was predeceased by her husband, by her elder daughter, Nancy S. Hutchins and by her sister, Bessie Ricker.

Surviving are her younger daughter, Marjorie (Midge) Parker and her husband Donald; a son-in-law, Wayne Hutchins; a nephew, Ruel (Skip) W. Ricker, Jr., five grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM with a funeral service following at 12:30 PM on Tuesday, August 21st at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home located at 580 Main Street in Springvale. Interment will follow at the Pine Grove Cemetery in South Waterboro.
