W. Harry Smith, 86, of Flora, IL died at 5:45 AM Tuesday, December 22, 2009 at Good Samaritan RHC in Mt. Vernon, IL.
He was born April 16, 1923 in Xenia, IL to Hoda & Maude (Ehlers) Smith. He married Carol J. Mower on May 20, 1978 in Hinsdale, IL.
He was a consulting civil engineer and served in the U.S. Army during WWII in the 104th Timberwolf Infantry.
As a graduate of University of Illinois with a degree in Civil and Sanitary Engineering, Mr. Smith's vast experience in dealing with corrosion in water and wastewater systems resulted in advising hundreds of municipalities and consulting engineers on corrosion management problems. He was a Sanitary Engineer with the Illinois Department of Public Health and Sanitary Water Board from 1948 to 1956. He then served on the Cast Iron Pipe Research Association from 1973 to 1978. He was a member of the American Waterworks Association and the National Association of Corrosion Engineers.
He is survived by his wife: Carol Smith of Flora; children: Sue Walston & husband Sam of Fayetteville, GA, Dan Smith & wife Carol of Darien, IL, Julie Smith of Leavenworth, KS, Sallie Rourk & husband John of Leavenworth, KS, Holly Baillie & husband Edgar of Elgin; sister: Vera Sands. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Private family services will be held. Frank & Bright Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Xenia. Memorials may be made to Clay County 4-H.
